This presentation will explore avenues to relief provided to federal inmates by the “compassionate release” provisions of the First Step Act. This will include a brief history of the law applicable to compassionate release, how the First Step Act’s provisions have been interpreted and applied in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a general overview of how to seek compassionate release on behalf of a client with an eye toward what works and what doesn’t.
