Consequences of a Conviction
1.25 Total Hrs
Presenters: Angela Rea and Amy Hannah
Regrets, we’ve all had more than a few.
“What if I had done things differently”
“I did not realize that this would happen”
“You never told me that it would go this way”
Musings about how things could have gone, about paths not taken, and about information not revealed make for dramatic stories and for moving songs. But no lawyer ever wants to hear her client say anything like the phrases above. This session will explore the criminal defense attorney’s role in investigating and giving advice about collateral consequences of criminal convictions other than immigration impacts. We will discuss identifying a client’s risks and goals and how to protect against the risks and pursue the goals. This presentation cannot give you a specific answer for your individual client in her particular situation, but it will examine different areas of life that can become entangled with the criminal case and discuss the law to look to try to untie the knots. We will touch on things such as: housing benefits, student loan eligibility, occupational licensing, and property forfeiture.
